What’s Chinese Current Lighting Industry Situation?

 

With the industry dividend brought about by the innovation of LED light source technology approaching its ceiling, the industry growth rate has shown a year-on-year slowdown trend. The scale of China’s lighting industry has transitioned from double-digit growth during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period to single-digit growth of below 5% during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period. As mentioned earlier, the scale advantage of China’s lighting industry is unshakable. In the future, high-quality development focusing on intelligent, healthy, green, and low-carbon lighting systems will become the industry’s inevitable path of development. High-quality development focusing on intelligent lighting technology led by control, IoT, sensors, artificial intelligence, frontier research on light biology and light health, upgrading of green and low-carbon technologies and advanced manufacturing equipment, and the promotion of professional and precise lighting design services will all provide necessary technological innovation support for the high-quality development of the lighting industry.

 

Characteristics of the industry in recent years include:

1Optimization of Product Structure

In terms of lighting product categories, LED products have gradually replaced traditional products, with LED products accounting for 75% of the overall increment. In the short term, both light source and luminaire products show growth in market demand. However, in the medium to long term, the market demand for light source products is slowing down, facing bottlenecks in growth. In contrast, the proportion of integrated luminaires is further increasing, currently accounting for over 70% of the overall industry. With the decrease in replacement demand and consumer preferences increasingly leaning towards luminaire products, it is foreseeable that the proportion of luminaire products and IoT lighting equipment will steadily increase.

2Continuous Expansion of Application Markets

In terms of lighting product application markets, lighting products are equipped with various sensors and communication modules, and the popularity of smart/interconnected lighting products is gradually increasing. With the global increase in demand for energy-saving renovation projects to achieve dual carbon goals, future commercial, residential, outdoor, and industrial lighting application markets will usher in new growth opportunities. With the focus of the country on developing the real economy and encouraging support for “specialized, sophisticated, distinctive, and innovative” enterprises, companies with corresponding foundations can expand their development strategies of “being different is better than being better”. Paying more attention to lighting applications, such as educational lighting related to light biology safety and visual health; agricultural lighting related to food safety and agricultural industrialization; off-grid lighting fields serving off-grid populations, catering to new consumption demands such as hiking, off-road, camping, and as off-grid lighting fields using clean energy in line with dual carbon goals; the UV disinfection field involving non-visual light applications highly valued after the epidemic; vehicle lighting fields related to the new energy vehicle boom and domestic substitution; and intelligent street lighting fields related to new infrastructure and smart city construction.

3Increased Industry Concentration

In terms of lighting companies, the sales of the top ten manufacturers as a proportion of the entire industry have increased from about 5% at the end of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period to 7.7% in the early stages of the “Fourteenth Five-Year Plan”, with three Chinese companies entering the global top ten. The concentration of the industry has increased to some extent but still remains relatively low, leaving ample room for future development. The increase in industry concentration helps enhance the international market discourse and competitiveness of related industries.

4Steady Progress in Technological Standards

In terms of technological progress: the industry’s independent core technology system continues to improve, digital transformation is fully underway, technologies in various segmented fields are deepening, research and innovation achievements are growing steadily, and concepts such as intelligent, healthy, and low-carbon lighting are deeply integrated into industry development.

Regarding standards, the construction of standardization institutions and systems has been further improved, the revision and promotion of various standards are continuously advancing. As of December 31, 2021, there were a total of 232 national standards related to lighting, and 358 group standards related to lighting were announced on the national standard information platform. Meanwhile, more industry enterprises are actively participating in standardization work.

5Continuous Improvement in Product Quality

In terms of product quality, whether in the domestic market or the international market, the overall quality of Chinese-manufactured products is good. National and local relevant departments attach great importance to the quality of lighting products, and regulations for the supervision and spot checks of lighting-related product quality are continuously released. The ability of national and local relevant departments to discover and solve problems through supervision and spot checks is continuously improving, guiding the industry to enhance quality awareness and helping consumers choose high-quality and reliable lighting products.

 

Next, the entire industry needs to be guided by the core force of market demand, attach importance to the development of segmented markets, optimize product structure, and thereby increase product added value; continuously invest in research and development, increase innovation efforts to meet and explore new demand scenarios; improve the level of production automation, upgrade from labor-intensive to intelligent manufacturing to improve production efficiency and the standardization and stability level of products; establish a safe and efficient supply chain system, enhance supply chain control capabilities, resilience, and redundancy; attach importance to brand building and create a brand ecology; strengthen the digital transformation and information construction of enterprises themselves to improve management level and operational efficiency; from product manufacturers to solution integrators and then to system service providers, the future pursuit is to build an intelligent, low-carbon system that can adaptively provide a healthy lighting environment through precise lighting design.
